An Evening of Science and Art in D.C.

Experience an extraordinary evening in Washington, D.C., where scientific discovery and artistic expression are explored as one. Enjoy an intimate reception followed by a discussion with Nobel Prize-winning physicist Kip Thorne, PhD (BS ’62) and acclaimed artist Lia Halloran.

The event begins with a pre-lecture reception at Tonic, offering an opportunity to connect with fellow Techers over hors d’oeuvres and drinks. Following the reception, attendees will walk to the National Academy of Sciences for a public lecture by Thorne and Halloran, where they will discuss their collaboration, offering unique perspectives on the cosmos through both scientific theory and artistic interpretation.

About the Lecture: The Warped Side of Our Universe

Physicist Kip Thorne and artist Lia Halloran will explore the intersection of science and art, using poetry and paintings to illuminate complex astrophysical phenomena. Their discussion will delve into topics such as spacetime warping, black holes, and gravitational waves, translating rigorous theoretical concepts into visual and literary forms. Through this conversation, they will offer new perspectives on how artistic interpretation can deepen our understanding of the universe.

An award-winning artist who has exhibited widely in galleries and museums. She is an associate professor and chair of the art department at Chapman University in Orange, California, and is represented by the gallery Luis De Jesus Los Angeles.
